"The Rules of Attribution"

This story talks about how writing students are not being taught the rules of plagiarism and copyright laws. it says that student are taught everyday to reuse though and recycle ideas and that the rules need to be better explain so that student wont get in trouble for dong something that they didn't even realize they were doing.

In my high school, the rules of plagiarism and copyright laws were always explained, so much so that if we are caught using the work of someone else without giving them credit we would fail the course. But just because one school teaches these things doesn't mean all schools do. While teaching to recycle and reuse ideas are goods things to teach student think that plagiarism and copyright needs to be better explained, especially because its such a huge things and a crime.

Now , where i couldn't relate to the students the story talked about because all my school taught us the different between plagiarism and recycling ideas, i do agree that schools need to better teach the rules so that student wont be in trouble later on in life for not be knowledgeable

Cultural Renaissance or Cultural Divide?

Things have changed alot over the years. Once a motion picture movie and a radio were considered "new" and luxury but now they are seen as no big deal. pop culture has come along way. now having an iPod isn't anything special but having an iPod touch or an iPod phone is admired. the pop culture of today and the pop culture of before highly differ. things once seen as the "hot new thing" are now seen as that "old thing from back in the day". example of this is the CD player vs. the iPod: going out on a daily bases and seeing people with an iPod is normal and damn near expected, but what if you see someone with a CD player? Your first thought is "why don't they just get an iPod?"

I feel that without and Cultural Renaissance there would be no Cultural Divide. pop culture has evoluted and its different now then it was years ago.

"And Now a Word from Their Cool College Sponsor"

In this story, Zernike, tells the story of two college students who offered corporate American an offer they could not refuse, to pay their full tuition in exchange fro them to be spokesmen for the company. The two boys chose First USA and they adversities for the company and the company pays $40,000 for the tuition, room and board, and books. they boys do interviews and have clothes advertising the company. they also have the company's logo on their surfboards. they are literally walking advertisement for the company.

to me this seems like a win/win situation. the boys get their tuition paid for and become some what of celebrities and the compo any gets 24/7 advertisement. This was very smart move on both parts. The best thing is that the boys did not have to do anything extreme like tattoo the company's name on the foreheads. Personally i admire the boys, it was a hot idea.

"Salespeak"

in the beginning, Fox tell the story of a girl named Pepsi Anderson, who, in her world, everything is named after a brand name, used especially as a form of advertisement. he then goes on to talk about school administrators that were considering auctioning off the names of school to the higher bidder. poking fun at the fact that there could be a chance that school will be named after fast-food chains or clothing stores. he basically talks about how advertising is everywhere. people whatever is needed to get their product out there to people, especially children and teenagers.

Reading this made me realize that this very true. advertising is everywhere. and the advertising always uses tricks to catch the eye of people and make them what is being advertised. they use things like a certain coloring to attract the eyes of buyers. they also use celebrities and make they look extra glamorous to make the consumer want to be like the celebrity.

i once did a paper on advertising of female perfume and i realized that companies pay dirty when the are advertising their product to make people buy t, even if they cant afford it.

"When a Risque Online Persona Undermines a Chance for a Job"

In this article, Alan finder talks about how employer do background checks on their job candidate via Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites. Finder says how many job candidates have been bypassed for job openings because of things posted on their pages, either by themselves or friends. The companies go onto these websites and find their candidates, and some even use their current employee if they go to the same school as the candidate or know the candidate on the website somehow. He also says how many college career counselors inform their students of this and encourage them to be careful of what they put on the pages and what they post. Many do not listen because they feel that their pages are just that private that no one will find it. Ironically, finder says that while many companies use these sites to check on their candidates, and even their current employees, a lot of companies do not. Some do not because they do not wish to see that sides of their employees and candidates and other do not because that it’s all true and that its just fiction, things they post to have a certain image in the eyes of their peers.
I have heard of this before and for this reason I am careful of what I post and what I am tagged in. I have never known a job I have applied for to Facebook or MySpace me but I’m sure it has been done. I do not think that there is anything wrong with companies doing this because the people that work for them represent the company whether they are at work or not. Yet I do believe that what a person has done in their past should not be a reason for not being hired but if they are currently doing things that the company does not approve of, then they should use what they find to determine the fate of the employee or candidate

"whats Wrong With Cindrella?"

In this article, the author talks about thr problems with the "Princess" image that hirls get fed when they are young. while she believes that this image can damage a girl more then help, she makes a point to show both sides of the agrument throughtout the article. She talks about how she explains her feelings to her daughter but at the same time is a little scraed that her daghter, because she is only 3-years-old, feels like her mother is telling her not to act like a girl.

she gives the history on the "Princess" line from Disney and she even talks with the man that created the "Princess" line. He says that the"Princess" line is not harmful and that there are no shown studies that prove that it will cause harm. The author says that while this is true, it has been proven that girls that always feel that they hve to be nice and girly all the time end up becomign depressed later in life.

while I agree with her that princessing may not always be the best thing for a young girl all the time and a girl should be taught to grow up and be able to depend on themselves when they get older and not on men or anyone else nd the can be anything that they want to be. i still do believe that treating a girl like a princess sometimes will help them o know not to let anyone mistreat them and do anything that they want to do to them.

"Everything Bad is Good for You: How Today's Pop Culture is Actually Making Us Smarter"

In this article, the author talks about how pop culture makes us. it talks about how older people have always thought that pop culture was bad for younger people, whether it is video games, movies, television, music, or a certain genre of books. It goes into great detail about the mind boggling process of playing and winning at a video game. it broke down the objectives the game. it talked about how playing video games includes using problem solving techniques. This can help video gamers in the real world and also in school. Even though its different situations it all can help at one time or another.

Even though the article did not go into television, i think that television helps alt. i know personally that a lot of the stuff and facts that i remember and use daily i learned while watching television. whether i was watching the news or a comedy or even the discover channel (which does not happened to often).
